Germline – The Subterrene War: Book 1, T.C. McCarthy (Orbit, 2011)
Germline is the lackluster, near future Military Science Fiction novel by T.C. McCarthy that serves as the first in the Subterrene War series. Written from the POV of a war correspondent, it has an interesting premise, but sparse descriptions and an unsympathetic narrator failed to really pull me in. The Perfect Spy, John LeCarré (Penguin Books, 1986 {Penguin Audio, Narrator: Michael Jayston)
The Perfect Spy by John LeCarré is an extremely well crafted novel that tells the tale of a British Intelligence Officer who mysteriously goes AWOL after his father’s death. Told part in part as a third person narrative and part as a first person “memoire,” it starts slow but eventually hooks the reader into its brilliant writing. Having said that, it is perhaps my least favorite of LeCarré’s Cold War period, and would recommend putting this towards the end of my LeCarré Reading List. Welcome Chaos, Kate Wilhelm (Houghton Mifflin, 1983){Audio Version: Blackstone Audio, 2007; Narrator: Johanna Ward}
The recent(ish) audio release of Welcome Chaos by Kate Wilhelm suffers slightly from the now dated plot concept, but remains a classic read due to the author’s tremendous skill as a writer. Continue reading
