Spells and Bullets Together: The Modern Soldier-Mage’s Guide to Warfare

by Tom Doyle Tor Books has just published American Craftsmen, my first novel in a three-book modern-day fantasy series. The “craftsmen” in the title are the magician soldiers and psychic spies who’ve been secretly serving their country since colonial times. … Continue reading

Flag in Exile, David Weber (Baen Books, 1995 {Brilliance Audio, Narrator: Allysson Johnson)

Flag in Exile is David Weber’s fifth book in the Honor Harrington series and focuses on the ramifications of her actions at the end of the last book, while simultaneously building more into the political and social background of the ‘Honorverse.’ It is an enjoyable read to anyone who likes the Honor Harrington series, but would likely prove unsatisfying to anyone who was not already a fan. Shadow of the Giant, Orson Scott Card (TOR, 2006 {MacMillan Audio, Narrator: Scott Brick, David Birney, Cast})

Shadow of the Giant is the fourth book in Orson Scott Card‘s ‘Shadow’ series, thus part of the Ender’s Game world. Here at last we see the story line moving beyond Bean’s childhood issues to follow on with the ramifications of the end of the Bugger war (giggle) and the return to Earth of a school filled with supergenius’ trained to lead armies. A solid addition to the series, but it does get bogged down with political diatribes. for the full review go to http://www.sophyanempire.wordpress.com Continue reading

Germline – The Subterrene War: Book 1, T.C. McCarthy (Orbit, 2011)

Germline is the lackluster, near future Military Science Fiction novel by T.C. McCarthy that serves as the first in the Subterrene War series. Written from the POV of a war correspondent, it has an interesting premise, but sparse descriptions and an unsympathetic narrator failed to really pull me in.
