Germline – The Subterrene War: Book 1, T.C. McCarthy (Orbit, 2011)

Germline is the lackluster, near future Military Science Fiction novel by T.C. McCarthy that serves as the first in the Subterrene War series. Written from the POV of a war correspondent, it has an interesting premise, but sparse descriptions and an unsympathetic narrator failed to really pull me in. Xenocide, Orson Scott Card (TOR, 1991{Macmillan Audio (2006), Narrators: Scott Brick, Gabrielle de Cuir, Amanda Karr, John Rubinstein, Stefan Rudnicki})

Xenocide by Orson Scott Card is the disappointing sequel to Speaker for the Dead and third volume of the Ender Wiggins series. While it has some interesting elements, it is mostly long discussions of Card’s personal philosophy and has a plot twist in the middle that forever changes an excellent Science Fiction world into a mediocre Science Fantasy one. The Wool Omnibus, Hugh Howey (Broad Reach Publishing, 2012)

The Wool Omnibus by Hugh Howey is one of the great examples of self-publishing done right. Starting with single short story (Wool) that was complete in itself, Howey built a dark and gripping series of stand alone short stories that meld beautifully into a great novel. Buy it now, or go to http://www.sophyanempire.wordpress.com for a full review! Continue reading
