Germline – The Subterrene War: Book 1, T.C. McCarthy (Orbit, 2011)
Germline is the lackluster, near future Military Science Fiction novel by T.C. McCarthy that serves as the first in the Subterrene War series. Written from the POV of a war correspondent, it has an interesting premise, but sparse descriptions and an unsympathetic narrator failed to really pull me in. The Wool Omnibus, Hugh Howey (Broad Reach Publishing, 2012)
The Wool Omnibus by Hugh Howey is one of the great examples of self-publishing done right. Starting with single short story (Wool) that was complete in itself, Howey built a dark and gripping series of stand alone short stories that meld beautifully into a great novel. Buy it now, or go to http://www.sophyanempire.wordpress.com for a full review! Continue reading

Shadow Puppets, Orson Scott Card (TOR, 2003 {Macmillan Audio, Narrator: Stephan Rudniki and others})
Shadow Puppets is the disappointing third book in Orson Scott Card’s ‘Shadow’ series, thus part of the Ender’s Game world. Full of long drawn out political and social commentary about the present day world, the plot remains stuck in the last novel. Cryoburn, Lois McMaster Bujold (Baen, 2010 {Blackstone Audio, Narrator: Grover Gardner)
Cryoburn by Lois McMaster Bujold is a good, fun espionage science fiction piece that almost stands on its own despite being part of a series. For full review go to http://www.sophyanempire.wordpress.com or http://wp.me/pWa2h-BF for a direct link. Continue reading
