A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin is an epic high fantasy novel that changed the face of its genre. The first truly post-modern of its kind, it is a compelling read with strong characters. The Hydrogen Sonata, Iain M. Banks (Orbit, 2012)

The Hydrogen Sonata is not Iain M. Banks’ best book, but is a good read for any fan of his Culture series.
